DogMastery has been at the forefront of protection training since 1991. We’ve always believed that your family member should have the temperament to attend all of your family’s extracurricular activities and possess the nerve to rise to the occasion, if necessary, in a threatening situation.
We were instrumental in the development of the Canine Good Citizen program (CGC), the temperament test sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, our parent club, as a prerequisite to enrollment in any formal protection program (1996). We incorporated this test before its official sanction to assure any dog entering a Home/Family protection program had the disposition to behave appropriately in the general public.
One must note: the protection dog is not a vicious animal that attacks anyone in their immediate presence. A protection dog is a stable, loving, tail-wagging dog that is competitive by nature and doesn’t enjoy losing to anyone outside its owner. The relationship between handler and protection dog is bonded so closely, there is never a question in the animal’s mind when requested to perform a certain exercise. When you see a protection dog biting an agitator (bad guy), it’s nothing personal or vicious; it’s an exercise that the owners have called for and the dog is going to execute this request to the best of its ability. Upon completion of the task, within reason, the dog should return to the regular, fun loving pet it has always been.
Of course, not all dogs are suitable for a program of this magnitude. It requires family members with exceptional nerve, pack drive and character. We welcome those considering the program to speak with our many clients that have completed this detailed course. DogMastery always offers consultations and candid assessments of your dog’s overall ability. We want to ensure public safety and the owners’ comfort in knowing they have a pet who can and will provide for their safety in any predicament.
